Baan Rom Taan, a nearly 120-year-old house, has been a family home for generations, originally serving as the honeymoon suite for the grandparents. The owner sought to preserve its legacy while honoring its history during the 2018 renovation. The house, previously painted white and having undergone several changes, needed to maintain its essence while reflecting both the past and the present.

The renovation aimed to breathe new life into the house. The owner provided old photos and stories to help guide the design, which included studying the original green tiled roof, wooden eaves, and gable walls. The challenge was to match the faded roof color, which was achieved by selecting an era-appropriate green from historical palettes.

Low ceiling heights in the original structure—2.3 meters on the first floor and 2.5 meters on the second—were addressed by adding traditional Thai cornices. These cornices elevated the ceiling and added both beauty and functional height to the interior. The second story’s original ceiling was removed to open the space, creating a more airy and flexible environment. The Gable Roof House at the back of the property was also transformed, turning former storage areas into open spaces that serve as a gathering area for the family.

A significant feature of Baan Rom Taan is the bridge connecting the Hip Roof House and Gable Roof House. The original white wooden bridge was a cherished memory for the owner, but it obstructed the view of the Hip Roof House. The design team reconfigured the bridge into a flipped L-shape, improving both functionality and accessibility while maintaining its historical significance. The new design also added a rear balcony area and an outdoor restroom.

Today, Baan Rom Taan remains a space that connects the past and present. The house functions as a gathering place for the family, where memories are honored and new ones are created. The exterior preserves the traditional architectural elements, while the interior has been thoughtfully renovated to accommodate modern needs. The reimagined bridge, the spacious rooms, and the new areas ensure that Baan Rom Taan remains a timeless place for the family to gather for generations to come.
