Bridges and layered roofs revive a familiar mall into a welcoming urban space.
"“Charn,” meaning terrace in Thai, is a renovation project aimed at reactivating an underutilized community mall that has been a familiar presence for years. The objective is to breathe new life into the space, enhancing its functionality and appeal for both long-time visitors and newcomers.
At the heart of the project is the idea of activating the underused spaces between the main building and its surroundings by linking them with a series of bridges. These bridges not only serve as connectors but also function as platforms—creating communal spaces that invite exploration and interaction, and reimagining the mall as a more dynamic and engaging environment.
Instead of constructing a single large roof, the design incorporates multiple circular roofs of varying sizes that overlap one another. This composition fosters a friendly and approachable atmosphere while adding an organic quality to the structure. The rounded forms complement the existing architecture and simultaneously modernize it, drawing people in from the street and the nearby BTS station. These layered roofs create a sense of visual openness that acts as a natural invitation, making the mall feel more vibrant and accessible.
By combining thoughtful design with a focus on activating underutilized spaces, “Charn” transforms the mall into a renewed community hub—revitalizing its role in the urban fabric and turning it into a meaningful destination once again."
