What If Architecture Could Heal?
What if an animal hospital offered rooms where pet owners could stay overnight with their companions?
What if it felt more like home than a hospital?
What if architecture could play a part in the healing process?
These questions became the foundation for our collaboration with Arak Animal Hospital on their latest branch, located in the heart of Thonglor. Arak envisioned a new benchmark in pet healthcare—a space that is friendly, holistic, and designed not only for treatment and rehabilitation, but also for grooming, a pet hotel, a swimming pool, and a café. A place that welcomes every life that walks through its doors—four-legged or two.
At INTEGRATED FIELD, we responded with the guiding concept of “Healing Through Design.” Informed by the growing Pet Humanization trend—where pets are treated as full members of the family—we saw this as an opportunity to redefine veterinary architecture by shaping an environment that supports well-being, comfort, and connection.
Central to our design is a large, open courtyard that brings in natural light and ventilation—enhancing both psychological comfort and energy efficiency. The courtyard also features a pet swimming pool, serving as both a functional rehabilitation area and a joyful centerpiece that enlivens the entire space.
We approached the layout by zoning the hospital into two distinct experiences: one for medical care and recovery, and another for lifestyle services like grooming and café visits. This separation allows each zone to be tailored for its purpose—whether quiet focus or lively interaction.
To make the building feel immediately welcoming, we carved an arched entry into the structure and wrapped it in soft-toned wooden slats. This gentle visual language continues inside, where curved walls and light wood finishes soften the architecture and dissolve the sterile feel typical of medical spaces.
In the waiting area, we designed high-backed seating distributed throughout the space—offering privacy and helping pets stay close to their owners, which we found to be a key factor in reducing anxiety.
Most importantly, we created recovery rooms where owners can stay overnight, with low beds designed for easy eye contact and physical closeness—because for many animals, healing happens faster when their humans are near.
Throughout the project, we worked closely with the Arak team in a true Co-Design Approach—ensuring the final result was thoughtful, empathetic, and tuned to the needs of every user, whether human or animal.
Arak Thonglor became a project not just about architecture, but about empathy, trust, and the quiet power of design to make life better—for all the living.
