"AGAL Gallery, originally a well-preserved two-story home built over 30 years ago, now stands as a harmonious blend of tradition and modernity. Tasked with renovating the space to reflect AGAL’s distinctive identity—a fusion of Thai-Chinese elegance—the design approach centered on preserving the building’s original structure while introducing contemporary touches. The result is a seamless integration of old-world charm with modern sophistication.
The home’s layout, with long, narrow rooms, lent itself perfectly to a showroom design. The designer reimagined the space by creating a central hallway that connects the rooms, incorporating AGAL’s signature handcrafted materials throughout. This design not only respects the original architecture but also adds a fresh modernity that defines the gallery’s identity.
AGAL Gallery is more than just a furniture studio—it is a celebration of Oriental design and craftsmanship. Known for its bold use of antique Thai-Chinese elements, AGAL has developed unique techniques, such as brass casting and gold leaf application, which set its pieces apart. The gallery’s design reflects this craftsmanship, creating an immersive brand experience. A vibrant red walkway connects chamber-like display rooms, each showcasing different furniture styles and techniques. The red walkway unifies the brand experience, showcasing AGAL’s expertise in furniture, sculpture, and painting. Contrasting light and shadow define each room, adding depth and character to the gallery space.
The addition of 'Saeng Ngao Sathan'(Light Shade Studio), a modern photography studio, perfectly complements the gallery. Born from the owner’s passion for photography and the interplay of light and shadow, the studio is designed as a minimalist structure that contrasts with the gallery’s ornate design. However, the two buildings are thoughtfully connected. The studio is divided into three parts: the “Foyer of Light,” a dramatic dark entrance hall with high ceilings and a skylight casting visible beams of light; the main studio space, designed for functional photography needs; and the sculptural stair hall, which features a geometric form that appears to float.
The design of the studio reflects its name, with light and shadow playing a central role in shaping the space. Despite its modern aesthetic, the studio maintains a connection to the main gallery through a shared central gathering space, blending antique and contemporary elements in perfect harmony.
Together, AGAL Gallery and Saeng Ngao Sathan form a cohesive narrative, where tradition and innovation coexist. The gallery honors the original structure of the home, showcasing AGAL’s expertise in furniture, sculpture, and painting, while the photography studio brings light, shadow, and craftsmanship together, offering a space that is both visually stunning and functional. This combination of spaces creates a rich, immersive experience, inviting visitors to explore the intersection of old and new, tradition and modernity."
