จากโจทย์ของ owner ที่ต้องการสร้างบ้านหลังใหม่ในรั้วเดียวกับบ้านเดิม IF เริ่มต้นด้วยการทำความเข้าใจตัวตน และความชอบของสมาชิกในบ้าน แล้วนำข้อค้นพบเหล่านั้นมาปรับใช้ในการออกแบบ สไตล์ของบ้านหลังนี้จึงผสมผสานทั้งความดิบของคอนกรีตแบบ Brutalist เข้ากับบรรยากาศแบบโมเดิร์น และเปิดรับธรรมชาติอย่างแนบเนียน

เราวางผังอย่างเรียบง่าย และใช้พื้นที่ทุกส่วนให้เกิดประโยชน์สูงสุด ที่ว่างตรงกลางระหว่างบ้านเดิมและบ้านใหม่ถูกปรับให้เป็นโซนจอดรถที่เชื่อมการสัญจรระหว่างสองอาคาร และด้วยข้อจำกัดของรูปที่ดิน ทำให้บ้านหลังใหม่จำเป็นต้องวางอาคารในทิศขวางตะวัน เราจึงออกแบบให้มีชายคาคอนกรีตยื่นยาวครอบคลุมทุกด้านของอาคาร เพื่อปกป้องตัวบ้านจากแสงแดดและฝน

โครงสร้างชายคานี้ถูกออกแบบร่วมกับวิศวกร โดยเจาะช่อง void ในบางส่วน และบางส่วนใช้ระแนงปิดเพื่อทำหน้าที่เป็นกันสาด ในขณะเดียวกัน void เหล่านี้ยังเป็นพื้นที่สำหรับปลูกต้นไม้ให้เชื่อมต่อระหว่างชั้น สร้างความต่อเนื่องระหว่างธรรมชาติและตัวบ้านอีกด้วย

พื้นที่ในแต่ละชั้นมีการใช้งานที่ต่างกัน รองรับไลฟ์สไตล์ที่หลากหลายของคนในบ้าน แต่ความตั้งใจเดียวกันของทุกคนคือการได้ใช้เวลาพักผ่อนและทำกิจกรรมร่วมกันอย่างสม่ำเสมอ ฟังก์ชันของบ้านจึงมีทั้งพื้นที่ส่วนรวม และพื้นที่ส่วนตัวที่ออกแบบมาเพื่อสมาชิกทุกคน ที่สามารถปรับเปลี่ยนการใช้งานได้อย่างยืดหยุ่น

อีกหนึ่งความพิเศษคือการนำสิ่งที่เจ้าของบ้านชื่นชอบและมีความผูกพันมาเป็นส่วนหนึ่งในงานออกแบบ ในที่นี้ได้นำไม้แผ่นใหญ่ที่เจ้าของบ้านสะสมไว้เองมาใช้กับพื้นภายใน โดยเลือกที่จะไม่เคลือบเงาเพื่อคงความเป็นธรรมชาติของเนื้อไม้เอาไว้ รวมถึงการนำเฟอร์นิเจอร์บางชิ้นจากบ้านเดิมที่คนในบ้านคุ้นเคยเข้ามาผสมผสานในบ้านใหม่อย่างลงตัว

บ้านชายคา จึงเป็นผลลัพธ์ของการออกแบบที่ก้าวข้ามข้อจำกัด ด้วยความเข้าใจพื้นที่ เข้าใจตัวตนและความชอบของคนในบ้าน เพื่อให้เป็นบ้านที่ตอบรับกับชีวิตในปัจจุบัน และรองรับครอบครัวที่จะเติบโตต่อไปในอนาคต

Eaves House

To create a new home within the same property as the existing one, IF began by understanding the family’s identity and preferences, then translating these insights into the design. The house combines the raw character of Brutalist concrete with a modern atmosphere and a subtle connection to nature.

We organized the site with a simple layout and made full use of every space. The area between the old and new houses was turned into a parking zone that also connects circulation between the two buildings. Due to the land’s constraints, the new house had to be placed perpendicular to the sun path, so a continuous concrete eave was designed to wrap around all sides, protecting the building from heat and rain.

The eave structure, developed with structural engineers, includes selective voids and slatted screens that act as canopies. These openings also serve as planting pockets that connect floors and strengthen the relationship between the house and surrounding greenery.

Each floor supports different functions to match the diverse lifestyles of the family members, while still encouraging shared time together. The layout provides both communal and private areas, designed with flexibility for future adjustments.

A key feature of the design is incorporating items meaningful to the owner. Large wood planks collected by the owner were used as indoor flooring, left unfinished to retain their natural texture. Familiar furniture from the old house was also integrated into the new setting.

Eaves House reflects a design approach that works with the site and the people who live there, creating a home suited to their present lives and ready to grow with the family in the future.
